Corosolic acid is derived from the extract of Lagerstroemia grandiflora (commonly known as Barnabas, which is abundant in the Philippine Islands).
In vivo and in vitro experimental results show that corosolic acid promotes the absorption and utilization of glucose by cells by stimulating glucose transport, thereby achieving its blood sugar-lowering effect.
The stimulating effect of corosolic acid on glucose transport is similar to that of inslin, therefore, corosolic acid is also called plant inslin.
Corosolic acid is an α-aromatic resin alcohol type or ursine type pentacyclic triterpenoid compound, and its basic skeleton is the five-ring mother core of polyhydropine.
Corosolic acid can exist freely in plants or in the form of saponins. In plants, it often coexists with its isomer maslinic acid (2α-hydroxyoleanolic acid). It has similar structure and chemical properties and is difficult to separate.
This natural product is currently on the market as a nutritional supplement in the United States.
