Valnemulin is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to control gastrointestinal infections in animals, and shows no cross resistance to other antibiotic classes. Like all the pleuromutilins, valnemulin inhibits protein synthesis by binding to domain V of 23S RNA.
Valnemulin mechanism of action is to inhibit the synthesis of bacterial proteins at the ribosome level, and
to inhibit the synthesis of RNA at high concentrations. It is mainly antibacterial, but it is also sterilized at high
concentrations. The antibacterial spectrum is wide and effective for G + and G-bacteria, and it is highly effective for molds and spirals, while it is less effective for intestinal bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella.
