What is Metformin CAS 143-18-0?

 

 

 

 

 Metformin is used for mild diabetes. It is mainly used for non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, among which obese patients can be used as the drug of choice, and it can also be used in combination .Effective for some cases in which sulfonylureas are ineffective.

This product is a biguanide oral hypoglycemic drug. It has various mechanisms of action, including delaying the uptake of glucose from the gastrointestinal tract. This product does not lower blood sugar levels in non-diabetic patients. Patients typically experience weight loss, reductions in plasma cholesterol, triglycerides, and pro-beta lipoprotein levels, and improvements in peripheral glucose metabolism during treatment.

This product has accurate hypoglycemic effect, and has no hypoglycemic reaction compared with sulfonylurea hypoglycemic drugs.  It can reduce the basal blood glucose concentration by ≥20% (usually 2mmol/L or 36mg/dl). It can improve oral or intravenous glucose tolerance test, and its hypoglycemic effect has nothing to do with pre-drug blood glucose concentration, age. It is often used in combination with sulfonylureas in patients who are not satisfied with sulfonylurea alone. 

The hypoglycemic mechanism of this product is different from that of sulfonylureas. Its hypoglycemic effect is mainly to increase the anaerobic glycolysis of surrounding tissues and increase the utilization of sugar. The main part of this effect is in the small intestine. Animal experiments have confirmed that this product can increase the anaerobic glycolysis of the small intestine and increase the utilization of sugar in the jejunum by 20%.

Metformin is the first-line medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This is particularly true in people who are overweight. It is also used in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome. Limited evidence suggests metformin may prevent the cardiovascular disease and cancer complications of diabetes. It is not associated with weight gain.
