N-Acetyl-L-Carnosine, N-Acetylcarnosine (NAC) is a naturally occurring compound chemically related to the dipeptide carnosine. The NAC molecular structure is identical to carnosine with the exception that it carries an additional acetyl group. The acetylation makes NAC more resistant to degradation by carnosinase, an enzyme that breaks down carnosine to its constituent amino acids, beta-alanine and histidine
N-acetyl L-carnosine supplements provide L-carnosine, an anti-oxidant dipeptide molecule and amino acid produced naturally in the body from the covalent bonding of the amino acids histidine and alanine via the enzyme carnosine synthetase. L-carnosine is found in relatively high concentrations in several body tissues, including the skeletal muscle, skin, kidneys, stomach, heart muscle, nerve tissue and brain.
